Zion United Church of Christ members voted unanimously Wednesday in a weather-delayed annual meeting to add the church’s welcoming statement to the constitution that governs all we do.

The statement of welcome was developed and adopted by the consistory in 2011 as part of the process to investigate and pursue a designation as an Open and Affirming church. The statement is as follows:

Zion UCC welcomes all who welcome everyone else. These include persons of every gender; sexual orientation; gender identity and expression; mental and physical ability; age; ethnicity; nationality; economic and social status; faith background; political affiliation; marital standing and family structure. We invite them to share in the life, leadership, ministry, fellowship, worship, sacraments, responsibilities, blessings and joys of our congregation as we seek to grow together in faith and love.

The amendment was offered in addition to other changes proposed for the purpose of cleaning up the language of the document. The statement was read, and with little debate, the amendment was approved.

In a unanimous vote to approve all the agreed-to changes, Zion became welcoming not only in word and deed, but also in our guiding document.

Taking a new focus on building from a foundation of longtime friendships among the children of the church, Zion’s revamped youth group for members in grades 3 to 6 kicked off Sunday with fun and games, food and a little bit of goal-setting.

We played board games and ping pong, ate spaghetti tacos and talked about some of the fun and community-oriented things the group wants to do this year. All while moms and dads enjoyed a couple of kid-free hours.

It was a great start on what promises to be a great year. If your child missed out, don’t worry. We’ll do it again in February.

Hi Everyone,

I hope your Christmas and New Year’s were as satisfying and wonderful as mine. As we start this new year, your church needs something from you…we need help taking down Christmas decorations!! The staff is asking that as many of you that possibly could, stop by the church at 6:00PM this evening and lend a hand. If we all work together, we should be done in less than an hour.

I don’t mean to beg….but PLEASE. Janice and I don’t want to do it all alone. Thank you!!!!!!!!!

Pastor Jane
